Frontera Cocina

I met up with my friends, Paula & Hunter, for a late lunch at Frontera Cocina, located at Disney Springs.   We began our meal by ordering cocktails…

Paula had the Barcelona Nights (Grey Goose Vodka, Fresh Lime, and Red Wine Reduction) on the left and liked it.  Hunter said his Red Wine Sangria (on right) was great!  As for me, I’m a big fan of La Cava del Tequila’s (located at Epcot Mexico pavilion) Avocado Margarita, so when I saw it on the menu here I had to have it.

La Cava Avocado Margarita with Casa Noble Blanco Tequila, Melon Liqueur, Avocado, Fresh Lime Juice, and a Hibiscus Salt Rim

This tasted pretty much the same as all of the avocado margaritas I’ve had at both La Cava del Tequila and next door at the restaurant, San Angel Inn (which comes from La Cava).  So I was very happy since I hadn’t been able to get to either La Cava or SAI for a margarita during this trip

Next we chose an appetizer to share…

Chips & Bacon Guacamole with Nueske Bacon, Tomatillos, Toasted Pepitas, Cilantro and Onions

And a close up of the guacamole…

The guacamole was delicious!  I loved the addition of the bacon to the usual guacamole ingredients.  As for the tortilla chips, these were the thick kind but still tasted freshly made and were good.

We were also served another bowl of tortilla chips along with two salsas, one green and one red…

I preferred the green one (herby salsa verde), as the red was a smoky chipotle.  I just don’t care for salsa that has a smoky flavor.  On the menu, these Chips & Salsas are listed under the Starters section for $4.00.  I could be wrong, but I don’t believe we were charged for this.  Maybe because we had ordered the Guacamole & Chips??

Hunter also ordered the Tortilla Soup.  Here is Step #1, showing his bowl filled with chipotle chicken,  avocado, Chihuahua cheese, green onion, and tortilla strips…

Step #2, our server poured the red chile chicken broth…

Hunter loved this!  He enjoyed it so much that they returned to Frontera Cocina later in their trip to have this again.  In his words, “That soup is amazing!  I dream of that soup!”

Now on to our entrees, starting with Hunter’s choice from the Tacos & Tortas section of their menu…

Carne Asada for making Soft Tacos (Grilled steak with poblano rajas (roasted poblano chile strips and sautéed onion) , black beans refritos with queso fresco (refried beans), salsa verde (green salsa), and guacamole

This was served with soft Corn Tortillas…

Paula ordered from the Entrées section of their menu…

Carnitas (Slow-cooked Pork Shoulder with garlic and lime, topped with pickled red onions)

Like Hunter’s steak tacos, Paula’s Carnitas entrée was also served with green salsa, refried beans topped with queso fresco, guacamole, and soft corn tortillas.  They both really enjoyed their entrée choices!

As for me, having had a big breakfast at Chef Mickey’s that morning, I went with an appetizer instead of an entrée…

Chipotle Chicken Tostadas (Crispy tostadas topped with creamy black beans, chipotle chicken, crema, queso fresco, and a slice of avocado)

And some close up shots…

These were delicious!  The chicken was very juicy and flavorful.  These tasted very much like the San Angel Inn chicken tostadas that I love.  These were topped with a slice of fresh avocado, so that was an added bonus.

I passed on dessert but Hunter spotted one of his favorites on the menu so he had to order it…

Coconut Lime Cuatro Leches (Sponge cake soaked with four milks topped with whipped cream, toasted coconut, and lime zest)

Hunter said, “Tres leches is my all time favorite cake.  So I’m sure you can imagine how good this one is to me!”  Like the tortilla soup, he had this again when they returned to Frontera Cocina.

Regarding Frontera Cocina, Hunter said, ” I love their food.  I could go back everyday and eat there!”  While I’m not quite that enthusiastic, I did really enjoy the margarita, bacon guacamole, and chicken tostadas and look forward to returning to Frontera Cocina during my Fall 2017 trip.
