For our first dinner of this trip my daughters and I went to Fixe. We had a 6:45 reservation so were seated not long after arriving at the restaurant, located at 500 W. 5th Street.
Here are photos of their menu on Saturday, April 15th…

But first the girls both ordered a cocktail…

They chose The Pear Necessity and the Smoked Sazerac…

At $14 each these were pretty expensive drinks, but they both loved their choices.
Then we ordered a few appetizers to share. The first was one of their signature dishes…
Fixe Biscuits with whipped Steen’s (cane syrup) butter
These were very good, especially with the sweet butter…but then again, for $3 each they should be very good.
We also shared these…
Deviled Eggs with fermented cabbage, smoked trout roe, and grated ham
Again very good, but again $3.00 each.
Then when it came time for us to order our entrees we were told by our server that they were out of two of their entrees, the Fried Chicken and Pork Roast. What??? It was 7:00 on Saturday night and they were out of two of their signature dishes?
So because I had planned to order Fried Chicken, I had to quickly come up with a Plan B. And Plan B was…
Lobster & Crawfish Pot Pie with Maine lobster, Louisiana crawfish, mushrooms, and sweet corn bechamel
This was good. I really enjoyed the flaky crust and the pieces of lobster inside.
One of my daughters chose this…
Duck Breast with duck and preserved cabbage ragout, smoked seaweeds, and apple jus
And another look…
Unfortunately, she didn’t like this. She had it cooked to the Chef’s recommended temperature, which I think was medium rare. This is how she normally orders her steak cooked so she thought it would be okay. But she thought it was a little too rare and didn’t like the texture. I tried to get her to send it back to be cooked more but she refused and just suffered through this. She said that the different flavors of this dish did not work well together, so this problem would probably not have been fixed by cooking it longer anyway.
As for my other daughter, she chose two more of the appetizers/small plates instead of an entree. The first of these was the…
Shrimp & Crab Toast with a buttermilk muffin, pickled onion, and lobster sabayon
This was good but very small, especially for $8.00.
And the other appetizer that she chose was…
Crispy Catfish with smoked uni tartar, nori, and kimchi collards
She liked this and said it had some interesting flavors, however the pickled kimchi tasted a little weird.
Then we decided to order one dessert to share…
We chose their…
Chocolate Truffle Cake with wheatberry, hazelnut, and salted pretzel ice cream
The cake itself was pretty dry but it was better when eaten with the salted pretzels and ice cream.
So overall we were a little disappointed with our first night dinner choice. With the Trip Advisor reviewers giving Fixe 4 1/2 stars and ranking it #56 best of all Austin restaurants, we had fairly high expectations. Yelp reviewers gave it a 4 star rating and ranked it #99. But our rating was only 3 1/2 stars.
