I first became interested in having breakfast at Garden Grill when I read a very favorable review on the Disney Food Blog. This was shortly after they began serving breakfast there in November 2015. Previously they served only lunch and dinner at Garden Grill. And while I have had dinner there once, that dinner was nearly 15 years. So I was definitely due for another visit to Garden Grill!
I had decided to do at least one character meal on this trip, but was open to the possibility of doing two if I was able to get a reservation at either ‘Ohana or Chef Mickey’s. This decision was made a little late in the game (of Disney dining scheduling), and both of these popular restaurants seemed to be fully booked for the 10 days of my trip. But I kept checking now and then and not long before my trip I was able to get a breakfast reservation at ‘Ohana. So I began my trip with two character breakfasts scheduled but of course I wasn’t satisfied until I was able to get the one reservation that had been previously unattainable…Breakfast at Chef Mickey’s! Lol So then the debate began as to which of the other two character breakfast reservations I would cancel. I came very close to canceling the Garden Grill one but ultimately ended up keeping it and I’m so glad that I did because food-wise it ended up being the best of the three.
I of course have photographic evidence to support my claim, so let’s begin with Exhibit A… the menu.
Once I was seated a server came to my table to take my drink order. I requested the POG (Passion Fruit, Orange, and Guava) juice and coffee with cream and both drinks were included in the price of the breakfast.
Several of the Disney restaurants are now serving this blend of juice, although it’s sometimes called by a different name like moonshine or jungle juice. But it all pretty much tastes the same to me. It’s good, and a nice change from the usual orange juice.
This breakfast was served family-style at the table so the next thing my server brought was this beauty…
Chip’s Sticky Bun Bake – Large Skillet Cinnamon Bun with Warm Vanilla Icing
And a closer view…
This tasted as wonderful as it looked…but it was huge!! Apparently they go by the “one size fits all” policy here because this was big enough to feed about 6 people. Being that there was just me, sadly I was barely able to make a dent in this. But that “dent” was sure delicious!
So apparently I had Chip to thank for this big plate of heaven, but it was his brother Dale who first appeared at my table…
And then this lovely bowl of fresh fruit arrived…
Let’s zoom in for a close-up…
This fruit was really good…fresh, ripe, sweet, delicious! So I probably could have left satisfied then with my plate of fruit and a cinnamon bun…
…but all of this was yet to come.
And yes, this big skillet of food was all just for me! It looked wonderful but also a bit overwhelming. After I had placed what I thought I could eat on my plate, I kept feeling like I should pass the skillet on to the family at the next table.
But anyway, in my skillet was a large pile of very tasty Hash Brown-style Potato Barrels (aka Tater Tots)…
A good size amount of perfectly cooked scrambled eggs (moist, but not runny)…
A pile of crispy (but not overcooked) bacon and a few thick slices of ham…
And of course, two Mickey waffles…
Plus condiments of maple syrup, warm chocolate-hazelnut sauce (like liquid Nutella), and salsa made with jalapeno-key lime hot sauce.
The salsa was very good on the scrambled eggs, but my favorite was the chocolate-hazelnut sauce on a Mickey waffle…
Oh, and speaking of Mickey…
Looking mighty cute in his bibs. But not to be outdone with the “cuteness” was Pluto…
And a round of applause for Chip, the baker of the glorious sticky bun…
I was pleasantly surprised by how good all of the food was at this breakfast. Not only was this the best of the three character breakfasts that I had on this trip but it now ranks in my top 3 favorite character meals along with breakfast at Crystal Palace and Tusker House. I will definitely return to Garden Grill sometime. I’d maybe like to give lunch a try…but only if I can tear myself away from that sticky bun.
