Hula Hut

I had wanted to dine at Hula Hut during my last two trips to Austin, but never made it there.  So I was determined to get there this time to have dinner overlooking Lake Austin and watching the sunset over the water.

Since we knew they didn’t take reservations, we headed there for dinner on a weeknight (Tuesday) thinking it would be less busy.   However, it was still very busy and we would have had to wait for awhile for a table in their partially enclosed dining area, so we opted to sit outside by the bar where it’s open seating and there was a table immediately available.

We of course had to start our dinner with some tropical themed cocktails…

One of my daughters ordered the Hu-La-La, their signature cocktail…

This is normally comes in a glass fishbowl and serves 2 people.  However, they don’t serve drinks in glass containers outside on the open deck so instead they gave her two plastic cupfuls of Hu-La-La.   She Hu-La-Loved it!  She loves rum and fruit juice cocktails, as do I, but I had been looking forward to another cocktail…

It had been ages since I’d had a frozen Pina Colada, and this one was good and well satisfied my craving for one.  I was surprised when my other daughter also ordered a Pina Colada because she tends to stay away from frozen drinks, as they often give her “brain freeze”.  But in the spirit of our tropical setting (even though we were actually just sitting by a lake in the middle of Texas, lol) she ordered one anyway and enjoyed it…no brain freeze!

Before ordering our food we took a little time to relax, sip our tropical fruit cocktails, snack on the complimentary chips and salsa…

…and enjoy the scenery.

Then it was time to decide what we wanted to eat.  As you can see, the menu here is a mix of Mexican and Polynesian food.

We started by sharing a couple of appetizers.  First was the…

Coconut Shrimp – Four coconut -crusted shrimp served with spicy orange sauce

And a closer view…

These were delicious!  We each had one and then fought over the 4th one.  Lol

We also had to try their award-winning dish and Hula Hut favorite…

Kawaikini Stuffed Avocado – Haas avocado filled with roasted chicken , green onions, cilantro, Monterrey Jack cheese and green chiles, rolled in panko bread crumbs & green chile spices, lightly fried and served on a bed of Hatch Green Chile & Queso Blanco Sauces.

And another look…

And a look inside…

For us this was good, but not award-winning good.  As an appetizer, we actually preferred their coconut shrimp.

Next were our entrees, but first some more sunset photos..

Now for our entrees, we all three chose something different.  One daughter ordered the…

Chicken & Guacamole Tubular Taco with roasted breast of chicken, guacamole and Monterrey Jack & herbed cream cheeses baked in a homemade flour tortilla with sour cream tomatillo sauce and drizzled with guajillo and sour cream.  Served with rice & refried beans.

She said this was just okay, nothing special.

My other daughter ordered this…

And a close up…

Chicken Chile Rellenos – Two fresh Anaheim peppers stuffed with grilled chicken, green chiles, Monterrey Jack cheese, green onions & cilantro, lightly breaded and fried, served on a bed of Queso Blanco sauce and drizzled with guajillo and sour cream.  Also served with rice & refried beans.

This doesn’t look particularly appetizing in my photos, but she said it was good.

As for me, I was craving a good burger and that’s what I got…

Hula Hut Burger – A half-pound beef burger, char-grilled and served on a toasted focaccia bun with lettuce, tomato, pickles, & sliced red onion.  I also added Monterrey Jack cheese & bacon for an extra charge of $1.30.  This was served with french fries.

While this burger was good, I kind of regretted not trying the Hawaiian style burger with fresh poblano chile, slices of grilled pineapple, bacon & Monterrey Jack cheese.  Oh well, maybe next time.  Lol

And that completed our meal, as we were too full for dessert.  But I continued to take photos of the beautiful sunset over the lake…

And a few night time photos of the Hula Hut’s outside bar area…

Hula Hut really did make you feel like you were on an island somewhere in the Pacific instead of in the middle of the state of Texas.  And for that reason, and not so much for the food, we gave Hula Hut a rating of 4 1/2 stars.  This is higher than the 3 1/2 stars given by Yelp reviewers and the 4 star rating on Trip Advisor.  Hula Hut is though ranked #43 best restaurant in Austin on Trip Advisor but only #189 on Yelp.
