This was our first ever visit to Skipper Canteen. We had an 11:35 lunch reservation and were one of the first groups to be seated in an empty restaurant.
I liked the decor and theming…
Then it was time to take a look at their menu…
First we all chose the same beverage…
This was a Fanta Melon Frosty from Thailand (listed on the menu as an Exotic Coca Cola selection) and all three of us loved it. This is one of the flavors that can be found at Epcot’s Club Cool (or at least it was there the last time I visited).
After placing our food orders we were brought this Cardamom bread…
This was just okay, slightly better with the honey that was served with it.
Soon our appetizers arrived…
Orinoco Ida’s Cachapas – House-made Corn Pancakes, Mojo-braised Pork, Black Bean Salad, and Avocado Cream
Sorry for all the cachapas photos but these were so delicious that I felt they deserved the extra attention.
Our other appetizer choice was the…
Falls Family Falafel with Chickpeas, Garlic, Onions, Lemon Juice, and Herbs served with White Bean Dip and Tomato-Cucumber Salad
These were good but not quite as good as the cachapas so they only get 3 photos instead of 4. The falafel balls were my choice for our appetizer but the kids talked me into also ordering the cachapas and I’m so glad they did.
Now for our entrees, starting with my son’s choice…
Char Siu Pork – Marinated Grilled Pork served with Chinese Broccoli and Jasmine Rice
And a closer view…
There was a lot of meat on this plate…brightly colored meat!! But according to him the pork was just okay. And of course, the Chinese broccoli was a total waste of plate space for him.
My daughter’s choice did not fare any better with her…
Skip’s Beefy Baked Pasta with Spiced Braised Beef, Pasta, Cheese, and Bechamel Sauce served with green beans
And a closer view…
Now I warned her that I had heard that this wasn’t very good but she wanted to try it anyway. Her advice now regarding Skip’s pasta?? Skip it!
So I was the Winner in the Entree Round with my choice of the…
“Tastes Like Chicken” Because It Is! – Crispy Fried Chicken with Citrus and Ginger-scented Rice, Chili Glaze, and Seasonal Vegetables
And some closer looks…
I thought the chicken was quite good and the rice was not bad either. I was pleased with my choice.
And that just leaves dessert.
Just like with the appetizer we weren’t able to agree on just one. I insisted on ordering this for us to share…
Kungaloosh! – An African-inspired Chocolate Cake with Caramelized Bananas served with Cashew-Caramel Ice Cream topped with Coffee Dust
And a close up…
I was disappointed with this. It tasted like a very chewy, dry brownie rather than like the moist chocolate cake I was hoping for. The cashew-caramel ice cream helped it but it was still our least favorite of the desserts.
My daughter, who is usually all about the chocolate, surprised me by wanting to order this…
Coconut Bar with Pineapple-Basil Compote and Vanilla Cream – Vanilla Chiffon Cake with Coconut and Lime-White Chocolate Ganache
This was good…better than the Kungaloosh! But actually our favorite was the complimentary birthday dessert that our friendly server brought for my son…
Volcano! – Gooey Chocolate Cake with Caramel Lava and exploding Chocolate Rocks will make you shout “UH OA!”
This was not listed on their regular Dessert menu, but can be found on the Kids’ menu.
So this meal was a bit of a mixed bag. The appetizers were very good, especially the cachapas. However, two out of our three entrees were just okay and one of the desserts was disappointing. But again on the plus side, the service we received from Michelle at Skipper Canteen was great. Jungle Skipper Canteen was given 4 stars by both Yelp and Trip Advisor reviewers. I would probably agree with their assessment. Additionally, on Trip Advisor Skipper Canteen ranks #241 of the nearly 3,000 Orlando area restaurants that are reviewed there. Narrowing it down to just the restaurants in the Disney World area, Skipper Canteen ranks #96.
