San Angel Inn Dinner – March 2025

We checked in at 7:12 for our 7:15 reservation and received the text that our table was ready just one minute after checking in. Unfortunately our two-top table was very awkwardly located in one of the busiest areas of the restaurant.

As you can see our table sat right at the bottom of the stairs, which was how all guests entered and departed from the restaurant. The narrow aisle in between our table and the stairs was where the servers went back and forth, to and from the kitchen.

Being seated right in the middle of this high traffic area really took away from the lovely ambience of this restaurant. Hopefully the food made up for it???

Here was their menu as of March 2025…

Don got a Dos Equis beer ($9.00) but I, of course, started with my favorite margarita…

La Cava Avocado – World Famous Avocado Margarita made with Flecha Azul blanco tequila, melon-orange liqueur, fresh avocado, lime juice and a hibiscus salt rim – $18.50 (Note that the current price as of April 2026 is $19.00)

I have loved this margarita ever since the first time I tried it, which was not long after La Cava del Tequila opened in 2009. I’ve had it at La Cava, San Angel Inn, and La Hacienda de San Angel many times and have only once had a bad experience. Years ago I had this at La Hacienda and it seemed like it was mostly ice…very light on tequila and liqueur. Other than that the Avocado Margarita has been perfect and always receives a rating of 5, including this time.

For our appetizer we chose the…

Tostadas de Pollo – Crispy Corn Tortillas topped with beans, chipotle chicken, cilantro, queso fresco and crema mexicana – $16.00

While these were very tasty they were a bit overpriced for just two small tostadas. Consequently we knocked down our rating for the Chicken Tostadas to a 4.5.

For his entree Don chose the…

Enchiladas de Pollo – Corn tortillas filled with chipotle chicken covered with your choice of ranchera salsa or mole negro, crema Mexicana, cotija cheese and crispy onion straws atop beans. Served with plantains topped with crema Mexicana and cotija cheese – $31.00 (Current price as of April 2026 is $32.00)

The chicken enchiladas are usually a safe bet at San Angel Inn and most other Mexican restaurants. In my opinion I think they were better here when they were served on a plate with sides of rice and beans rather than being drenched in a bowl full of cream sauce. Don thought this version was good though and gave the Chicken Enchiladas a rating of 4.

For my entree I chose the…

Camarones a La Diabla – Chipotle pepper and garlic sauteed shrimp atop a corn rice medley with roasted vegetables – $32.00

Being that the name of this dish translates to “Deviled Shrimp”, I asked my server about the spice level and was told that the sauce was spicy. I still wanted to give it a try so I asked if the sauce could be served on the side (or SOS as listed on our bill, haha!). And that decision turned out to be a very wise one because the sauce definitely had a kick. Being able to control the amount of sauce that I ate with my shrimp was probably the difference from it being inedible (had it been drenched in this sauce) to it being enjoyable for me. I gave the “Deviled Shrimp” a rating of 4.

NOTE: It appears that this dish is no longer on the menu at San Angel Inn.

We passed on dessert because I was really wanting to try the ChocoFlan dessert that was being served at Mexico’s Flower & Festival booth.

So the food was good here and my Avocado Margarita was excellent, as usual. However, our overall dining experience would have been much better if we hadn’t been seated at a table that appeared to be squeezed in where it really should not have been.
