This was my first ever visit to the quick service restaurant at Port Orleans French Quarter. I had heard about the beignets here and had seen photos which led me to believe that they might be similar to the delicious ones I had had at Café de Monde in New Orleans back in 2010…
Here is what I found inside Sassagoula, starting with their Bakery Shop menu…
As you can see, not only did I need to decide whether I wanted three or six beignets, but also whether I wanted them plain (as displayed in their case)…
…or with a dipping sauce (there were three to choose from), or add ice cream, sauce and whipped cream and make it a beignet sundae (as pictured in the menu photo)…
But before making that decision I took photos of some of the other options in their bakery case, starting with what I think were chocolate cream mini pies/tarts…
And I think these were pumpkin flavored…
And strawberry…
And (Candy) Worms and (Chocolate) Dirt…
Then they also had these Mardi Gras King Cakes…
And another look…
But none of these deterred me from my goal of trying their beignets. So I chose the basic 3 pack of Beignets (no dipping sauce)…
And a close up…
Since I wanted to share with my friends, Paula & Hunter, the 3 pk. worked out well, as we each had one. And my one beignet was good. Not quite as good as the ones we had years ago at Café du Monde, but part of that enjoyment could possibly be attributed to the New Orleans setting. As an added note, as of July 1, 2018 the Sassagoula beignets are now Mickey shaped. So on the positive side, food that is shaped like Mickey Mouse is generally better than in its boring regular form, right?? However on the negative side, the price for three beignets was increased from the price I paid of $3.99 (less 20% Tables in Wonderland discount) to $4.49. Also the 6 pack price increased from $5.49 to $6.99, plus I heard the 6 pk is no longer a Snack Credit option on the Disney Dining Plan.
But our review doesn’t end here with just the beignets. While I was making my decision and taking photos in the Bakery section/station of the restaurant, Hunter and Paula went off to the Grill Shop station to get this snack…
This was the Kids Chicken Nugget Meal which came with a choice of sides and a choice of a small milk or a small bottle of Dasani water. They chose French fries for their side (I think the other choices were Grapes & Carrot Sticks, Apple Slices, or a Cookie).
They really enjoyed this and ended up getting it a few more times during their 5 night stay at Port Orleans French Quarter, which would begin the following day.
So based on my very limited experience of trying just their beignets, I would give my first visit to Sassagoula 4 stars, which matches that given by the reviewers on Trip Advisor. However, Yelp reviewers only gave Sassagoula 3 1/2 stars. As for its rankings, it comes in at #441 of the nearly 3,000 Orlando area restaurants reviewed on Trip Advisor and #137 when narrowing it down to just the Disney World area restaurants.
