After checking out the menus at the various stations of this large food court-style quick service restaurant, we both ended up choosing from their Cajun specialties.

Don chose the…

Gumbo – Rich Stew with Chicken, Sausage, Okra, and Spices served with rice – $10.99
This had a “kick” to it but we both thought it was an acceptable level of spice. I gave my spoonful of the gumbo a rating of 3. Don liked it slightly more than me and gave it a rating of 3 1/2.
My choice was the…

Jambalaya – Chicken and Andouille Sausage with Vegetables cooked in a rich Spicy Sauce with Rice and served with Corn Bread – $12.49
First of all, when reading their menu description I was expecting there to be both chicken and andouille sausage (two separate meats) in this jambalaya but there was no chicken…at least not in my serving. So I’m thinking that maybe the andouille sausage in this dish is made with both pork and chicken??? Anyway, the pieces of sausage (which were plentiful) had just a hint of spice and the sauce also had some heat but again we didn’t think it was too spicy. I enjoyed the overall flavor of this dish more than I liked Don’s gumbo, and gave it a rating of 4. Don said it was a toss-up between the two dishes for him and gave the jambalaya the same 3 1/2 rating that he gave his gumbo. We agreed though on our rating of the corn bread, both giving it a rating of 4. It was sweet and helped to balance out the spice of the jambalaya.
So would we go out of our way to dine again at Sassagoula? Probably not. But it’s a good option if you are staying at Port Orleans French Quarter or visiting the resort to catch some live jazz music at their Scat Cats Club Lounge or get some Mickey beignets from their Scat Cats Cafe, both of which I would recommend doing.
