Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ Brunch – March 2024

A special Brunch Food & Cocktails menu is offered at Homecomin’ on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. – 12:55 p.m. Homecomin’ is quite popular (especially their weekend brunch) so it is one of those Disney dining reservations that you need to book 60 days in advance, which is what I did. I was able to snag a 12:45 reservation for Easter Sunday, so just under the wire for their brunch. Plus an added bonus for having a later brunch is that after 11:00 a.m. you also have the option of ordering from their regular Lunch menu. One other note, though this was Easter Sunday, they did not have any special food or beverage offerings for the holiday.

Before I get into our choices, I wanted to mention that when we checked in we were given the option of dining inside or outside. It was a nice day so we decided to stay outside and were rewarded by having a much more quiet and private meal. Homecomin’ is a very popular restaurant so the dining room always seems to be at capacity and therefore can be quite loud.

Now on to our beverage choices. While my husband just had coffee (which he said was good), I had one of my favorite things on the Homecomin’ Brunch menu. From their Rise n’ Shine Cocktails menu I chose the…

White Peach Sangria – La Perlina Moscato with muddled orange and mango, fresh peach puree, and peach moonshine – $16.00

This is so delicious! I love mimosas but for me this was even better than a mimosa. So fruity and refreshing. If it hadn’t been $16 I would have likely had more than one. But anyway, the one I did have received a perfect rating of 5.

As for my entree, I again chose from the Brunch menu but tried something that I hadn’t had here before…

French Toast – Thick slices of griddled bread dusted with powdered sugar and served with spiced cane syrup and choice of side (I chose the Pecan-smoked Bacon) – $19.00

My one complaint regarding the French toast is that there were a few spots that were undercooked. I was able to eat around these though and with 4 slices I still had plenty to eat. Otherwise, the flavor was very good and I enjoyed both it and the bacon. This had the potential of being a 5 but with the undercooked issue I had to downgrade it to a rating of 4.

My husband went with another Brunch entree that I hadn’t tried/reviewed before…

Southern Poutine – Crispy tater tots smothered in pulled pork and sawmill gravy and topped with a fried egg and bacon crumbles – $22.00

He doesn’t like eggs with runny yokes so requested it to be cooked “over medium” instead of “over easy”, as it probably would have normally been served. The man loves his pork so with this entree having both pulled pork and bacon it was a hit for him. He rated it a nearly perfect 4.5.

Though we were quite full, I couldn’t resist ordering (from their regular menu) one of my Homecomin’ favorites, the Hummingbird Cake. This is pineapple and banana cake with cream cheese frosting and is one of Chef Art’s specialty desserts, along with the Chocolate Pecan Pie and his signature Shine Cake (soaked in moonshine syrup). I’ve yet to try the other two though because I’ve never been able to convince myself to not get the Hummingbird Cake because I love it. Anyway, we got this boxed up “To Go” so didn’t get the vanilla bean ice cream that normally comes with it. We still paid the full price of the dessert though ($14.00), but even so I think it was well worth it. It is a very large piece of cake (so easily sharable) and was moist and delicious, even after sitting in our room fridge for a few days before we got around to eating it. Even my husband, who doesn’t like cake, enjoyed it. Our rating for the Hummingbird Cake was a 5.

I apologize that I forgot to take a photo of our cake before eating it a couple days after having brunch at Homecomin’. Here is a photo that I took of my Hummingbird Cake when I last had it a few years ago. You can see how large (3 layers of cake and icing) it is.

Note: I just discovered that they serve Hummingbird Cake at Chef Art’s Chicago restaurant. I’m only a few hours from Chicago and our son lives there now so I’m thinking a visit to Chef Art Smith’s Reunion is neededBECAUSE I NEED A REUNION WITH THIS CAKE!

So good food, good cocktail, good dessert and good service…overall it was a very good meal!
