Pecos Bill Cafe – April 2024

We chose Pecos Bill Cafe for our quick service lunch at Magic Kingdom primarily because it had more gluten-free options that Emily was interested in. Gluten/Wheat Allergy-friendly entrees on their April 2024 menu included 1/3 lb. Angus Bacon Cheeseburger, Beef or Chicken Nachos, and Chicken, Pork Carnitas or Veggie Rice Bowls.

From these options, Emily chose…

Chicken Nachos – Tortilla Chips topped with Queso, Seasoned Chicken, Lettuce, Tomato, Sour Cream and Salsa – $11.49

Emily said the meat was decent but the chips were standard and the queso was pretty bland. She added, “I could eat it again if needed but it was entirely forgettable.” Emily gave the Gluten-free Chicken Nachos a rating of just 2 stars.

Two of our group chose this for their entree…

Mixed Greens Salad with Pork Carnitas – Mixed Greens Salad with Pork Carnitas, Strawberries, Tomato, and Red Onion – $12.29

My husband said his salad was okay. He thought the strawberries were an odd addition and a weird flavor combination with the pork. Don gave this salad a rating of 3. Jake also had the salad but he gave it a less favorable rating of only 2. So their average for the Mixed Greens Salad with Pork Carnitas was 2 1/2.

Two others of our group chose the…

Pork Carnitas Rice Bowl – Cilantro Rice topped with Seasoned Pork, Grilled Peppers and Onions, Pinto Beans (and Lettuce, Tomato, Sour Cream, and Salsa (not pictured) – $12.49

The main criticism here was the blandness of this dish. The pork wasn’t as flavorful as they were expecting and the pinto beans were super boring. They agreed that black beans would have been better. Both gave the Pork Carnitas Rice Bowl a rating of only 2.

Another person also had the Rice Bowl but chose a different protein…

Chicken Rice Bowl – Cilantro Rice topped with Seasoned Chicken, Grilled Peppers and Onions, Pinto Beans, Lettuce, Tomato, Sour Cream, and Salsa – $12.49

This rated a bit better because the chicken was more flavorful than the pork. The Chicken Rice Bowl received a rating of 3.

As for me, I wanted to try all of their protein (meat) options so I chose the…

Taco Trio – Three Flour Tortillas served with Seasoned Ground Beef, Pork Carnitas, and Seasoned Chicken. Served with Lettuce, Tomato, and Sour Cream toppings (not pictured). – $10.99

I agreed with the others that the chicken was better than the pork. It was also better than the ground beef. Consequently, I gave the Chicken Taco a rating of 3 but the other two tacos received only a 2.

Also, some of our group shared an order of Chips and Queso

Tortilla Chips and Queso – $5.99

As Emily said, “Standard chips, bland queso.” Our rating was only a 2.

So unfortunately our lunch at Pecos Bill was pretty underwhelming. I probably wouldn’t recommend it based on what we tried from their April 2024 menu. However, since then Pecos Bill completely revamped their menu. Now they have Create-Your-Own Options where you can choose between 3 protein options (Green Chili Pork, Coca-Cola Cherry Braised Beef, or Citrus-Chipotle Chicken) to add to one of 4 bases (Steamed Tamale, Nacho Bowl, Rice Bowl, or Southwest Caesar Salad). Other new entrees on the menu are Grilled Masa Flatbread and Double Chili con Queso Burgers. Also they have replaced their Queso with Queso Chipotle, which sounds like an improvement. So it sounds like we should have waited another 6 months before trying Pecos Bill Cafe for the first time. I’ll probably add it to my list to try again sometime, but first I want to try some other quick service restaurants at Magic Kingdom.
