Rosa Mexicano Dinner (March 31, 2024)

I had made a reservation for our party of 7 on Open Table for 8:30 and we were seated shortly upon arrival at the restaurant.

This was our first time visiting this restaurant, which had opened on March 30, 2023. I thought the decor was quite nice…

I especially liked the light fixtures…

We started by ordering cocktails. Emily and Bryan both had a…

Coconut Mojito – Cruzan Rum, House-made Coconut Liqueur, Fresh Mint, Coconut Milk, Canela-infused Agave Nectar, Fresh Lime – $18.00

They said this was very tasty!  Maybe too sweet for others but they loved it.  They gave it 4 stars.

The rest of us shared a pitcher of Rosa Mexicano’s signature cocktail…

Frozen Pomegranate Margarita (pitcher serves 5) – $63.00

The five of us enjoyed the pomegranate flavor. It was different from the typical flavors offered. They also had Mango, Passion Fruit and Watermelon flavored frozen margaritas in addition to the common flavors of Lime and Strawberry. The five of us gave our pomegranate margaritas ratings between 3 1/2 – 5 so overall I will rate it a 4.

We also shared some Guacamole, which was made tableside…

Guacamole en Molcajete (Classic Version) – $18.00 (price as of this writing is $20)

NOTE: For an extra charge you can get toppings added like grilled pineapple, bacon & cotilla cheese, or lobster.  They also offer a Guacamole Tasting with a sample of all three of these.

We were asked by our server what level of spice we wanted for our made-to-order guacamole.  We chose medium, which wasn’t very spicy at all.  Based on this, I would think the mild version would have been pretty bland.  Our ratings for the guacamole again varied from 3 – 5 so overall I will give it a rating of 4.

Now on to our entrees.  My husband, Don, and I decided to share an entree and we chose the Enchilada Tasting…

With this we were able to choose three of five enchilada options listed on the menu. Here is what we chose…

Pictured from left to right are:

  • Roasted Chicken Suizas (with Tomatillo Salsa Verde, Chihuahua Cheese, Crema, Cilantro and Onion)
  • Duck Carnitas (with Mole Poblano, Queso Fresco and Crema)
  • Beef Brisket (with Red Guajillo Chile Sauce, Cotija Cheese, Pico de Gallo and Crema)

These looked so good but unfortunately, with the exception of the Beef Brisket enchilada, we were disappointed by their taste. While we really enjoyed the Beef Brisket, mostly due to the tasty chile sauce, the other two were very bland. So, though we rated the Beef Brisket Enchilada a 5, the two other options were rated only a 3.

NOTE: Sadly, I no longer see the Enchilada Tasting option on their current menu (November 2024), but maybe still available if you ask for it??? Also, it looks like they replaced the Duck Carnitas Enchilada with a Seafood one (Del Mar).

Rosa Mexicano Dinner Menu (as of November 2024)

The enchiladas were served with a side of either Mexican or White Rice.  We chose the Mexican Rice…

We rated the Mexican Rice a 4.

Emily and Bryan decided to share two different entrees. They chose the Enchilada Tasting for one of these…

They also chose the Duck Carnitas (at top) and the Chicken Suizas (at bottom) but instead of the Beef Brisket that we chose (which was our favorite) they opted for the Chihuahua Cheese Enchilada (in the middle). With this one they had a choice of the mole, salsa verde, or the red chile sauce, which is what they chose. Their opinions of the three sauces differed from ours. While we preferred the red chile sauce and therefore liked the Beef Brisket Enchilada best, they favored the mole and liked the Duck Carnitas Enchilada best. So while they rated the Duck one a 4, the other two enchiladas only received a 3.

Therefore, since the Duck Enchilada (their favorite) is no longer on the menu, the only one I would recommend is the Beef Brisket.

For their other shared entree they chose…

Birria Quesatacos – Braised Angus Beef Brisket, Queso Oaxaca, Cilantro, Onions, Consomme Dip and Corn Tortillas – $18.00 (Price now $24.00)

Unfortunately they were not impressed by these, as they thought they were quite bland. They rated them only 2 1/2.

The other three of our group decided to each choose a different kind of Tacos. Since there were 3 tacos served with each order, they were then each able to try three different tacos…which I thought was brilliant.

Their first choice…

Grilled Steak Tacos with Guacamole, Pico de Gallo, Cotija Cheese and Flour Tortillas – $23.00 (Price as of November 2024 menu now $26.00)

Ratings on the Steak Taco varied from 2 1/2 – 3 1/2. The 2 1/2 rating was based on the quality of the steak, which they thought was too chewy. So overall I will give the Steak Tacos a rating of 3.

Their second choice…

Roasted Mushroom Tacos – Plancha Roasted Shitake, Cremini & Oyster Mushrooms, Queso Fresco, Green Apple Slaw, Sliced Avocado and Flour Tortillas – $15.00 (Price now $19.00 as of November 2024 menu)

Though this was an odd combination of textures, they actually liked these more than they expected. All gave the Mushroom Tacos a rating of 3 1/2.

Their final choice was the…

Pork Carnitas Tacos with Shaved Cabbage, Spicy Salsa Verde, Habanero Pickled Onion, and Flour Tortillas – $17.00 (Price now $21.00 per November 2024 menu)

Note: With all of their taco choices they were given the option of Flour or Corn Tortillas.

They all agreed that this was their favorite of the three. Their ratings were either a 4 or 4 1/2, so overall we will give the Pork Carnitas Tacos a rating of 4.

That concluded our meal at Rosa Mexicano, as we had dessert waiting for us back in the room. Overall, our first experience here was good but not great. We’ve all had better Mexican food at our local restaurants for much cheaper prices, especially Emily and Bryan who live in Texas.
