Space 220 Restaurant – October 2021

Space 220 had been open for just a little more than a month (opening date Sept. 20, 2021) when we visited for dinner on Wednesday, October 27th.

We arrived to check in about 5 minutes early for our 7:15 dinner reservation…

We were given our pass to board the Space Elevator that would take us up to the Centauri Space Station…

This simulated being rocketed 220 miles above Earth to the Space Station where the restaurant is located…

About 2 minutes later we had reached our destination…

We were seated on the second level and had a great panoramic view of the windows looking out into space…

Now on to our cocktails, which we ordered at an additional cost. First up is Andrew’s choice, which arrived looking like a glass of pink cotton candy…

Until our server poured the orange liquid into the cotton candy…

Then his drink looked like this…

This was called an Atmospritz.  The ingredients were listed as New Amsterdam Vodka, Aperol, Monin Blood Orange, Orange Juice, Prosecco, and Cotton Candy Cloud.  The price was $15.00.  This cocktail is not listed on the current Feb. 2024 Space 220 cocktail menu.

Though Andrew thought the presentation of his cocktail was fun, he didn’t like the bitter taste of the Aperol.  Therefore he gave his Atmospritz a rating of 3.

For my cocktail I chose the…

Planetary Punch – Bacardi Silver & Malibu Rum, Blue Curacao, Guava & Coconut Juice ($15.00)

This was sweeter than Andrew’s drink and tasted a lot like a pina colada. Since I like pina coladas, I gave it a rating of 4.  My drink is also not on the current cocktail menu.  In fact, the current cocktail menu seems to be completely different than the one they had when the restaurant first opened in 2021.

Now for the choices we made for our 3-course dinner, for which we paid $79 plus tax & gratuity per person.  The current price as of Feb. 2024 is still $79.00.

From the Lift-Offs section of the menu (aka Appetizers), Andrew chose the…

Big Bang Burrata – Burrata di Mozzarella, Grilled Artichoke Hearts, Arugula, and Sunflower Seed Romesco

I was surprised when he chose this but I guess he really didn’t find any of the choices to be particularly appealing so he just went with the top one on the list…

He didn’t say much about it other than giving it a rating of 3, which I guess means he thought it was ok.  The Big Bang Burrata is still on their current menu, although they’ve made a few tweaks to it.

My appetizer choice was the…

Blue Moon Cauliflower – Tempura Fried Cauliflower, House-made Hot Sauce, and Blue Cheese Dust (Vegan)

After reading about this I was really looking forward to trying it but I ended up being disappointed.  The hot sauce was spicier than I’d expected and it actually made my lips burn.  Consequently I rated this only a 3.  This seems to be a popular choice though since it is still on menu and with the exact same ingredients.

Now for our Star Course (aka Entrée).  Andrew chose the…

Roasted Free-Range – Herb Roasted Chicken with Mashed Potatoes and Brussels Sprouts

Again I was given his rating of 3 without any other comments.  So I guess it was just okay.

So since he did not get the steak, I felt it was my duty to order it (haha)…

And a little closer look…

8 oz. Filet Mignon with Cabernet Butter, Potato Leek Croquette, and Haricots Verts

I ordered this medium and I think it was properly cooked this time, although the lighting here made it a little difficult to tell for sure. While the filet was tender, it could have used more seasoning. The cabernet butter was a weird pink color and didn’t look particularly appetizing on top of the filet. It also didn’t seem to add much flavor. I liked the potato leek croquette. It reminded me of a potato pancake. The haricots verts were just green beans. Overall I rated my entrée a 3 1/2.

This filet was not the best steak we had on this trip and not the worst. To my surprise though it was better than the steak at California Grill and slightly better than the filet at Be our Guest. However, my favorite steak of the trip was the one I had at our breakfast at Cinderella’s Royal Table (which I rated 4 1/2) and coming in second was my filet at Steakhouse 71 (which received a 4). The top score though goes to Andrew’s filet at Steakhouse 71 which he gave a perfect 5 rating.

I also added Shrimp for an additional $9.00…

These had been sautéed in garlic butter and were plump and quite tasty. However, for $9.00 I only received 3 shrimp. Because of this I rated them only a 4. Had I known that I would only get 3 shrimp for this price I probably would have skipped it. And even more concerning is that they are now charging $15 for the shrimp add on, per their current menu. Assuming you still receive only 3 shrimp, that’s $5 per shrimp. Is one shrimp (no matter how tasty it is) really worth $5? I think not,

And that just leaves the Supernova Sweets (aka Dessert). First is Andrew’s choice…

Chocolate Cheesecake – Whipped Chocolate Ganache, Chocolate Sauce, White Chocolate Crunchy Pearls, Cookie Crumbs, and Dark Chocolate Shards

Andrew loved the combination of the cookie crumbs with the whipped chocolate ganache. He gave this a rating of 4 1/2 and would have given it a perfect 5 if there had been more cookie crumbs.

My choice for dessert was the…

Sticky Toffee Pudding Cake with Dark Chocolate Sauce, Caramel Crunchy Pearls, Salted Toffee Drizzle

The pudding cake had the texture of bread pudding. I especially liked the thick, salted toffee sauce. Though the menu description called this a drizzle, I was happy that there was much more than just a drizzle The bananas on top was a nice surprise too, as they were not listed in the description of this dessert on the menu. I gave this dessert a rating of 4.

So the desserts were the best part of our meal, but unfortunately neither of our choices are on the current menu. The only dessert (other than Gelato & Sorbet) that still remains from the original dessert menu is the Carrot Cake.

In summary, this was probably a one and done dining experience for us. We are glad we did it but don’t need to do it again. We might though consider having a drink and maybe an appetizer at the lounge sometime but will probably wait until it’s easier to get a reservation there.
